How To Prepare Sea Moss?

Preparing sea moss gel at home is a simple process that involves washing, hydrating, and blending the sea moss into a smooth consistency. Below are the two most common methods.

Method 1: Soak and Blend (Cold Process)

This method preserves the raw integrity of the sea moss.

  1. Measure: Use approximately 30 grams (about 1 oz) of dry sea moss. This will yield roughly 500 grams (17.6 oz) of gel.

  2. Clean: Vigorously wash the sea moss in fresh, alkaline water to remove excess salt, sand, and debris. You may need to repeat this 2–3 times.

  3. Soak: Place the cleaned sea moss in a bowl and cover it completely with alkaline filtered water. Allow it to soak for 24 to 48 hours.

  4. Blend: Transfer the soaked Sea Moss (and a small amount of the soaking water for consistency) to a blender. Blend for approximately 5 minutes until smooth.

  5. Store: Pour the gel into a clean glass jar and refrigerate.

Method 2: Boil and Blend (Quick Process)

This method is faster and often results in a smoother, more "jelly-like" consistency.

  1. Clean: Thoroughly wash your sea moss in fresh water to remove all impurities and salt.

  2. Quick Soak: Cover the sea moss with alkaline filtered water and let it soak for 4 to 6 hours.

  3. Simmer: Transfer the sea moss and the soaking water into a pot. Bring to a simmer and cook for 15 to 30 minutes, topping up the water if it evaporates too quickly.

  4. Cool: Once the water has reached a tender, gelatinous consistency—and appears slightly translucent.

  5. Blend: Transfer the mixture to a blender and process until it reaches a smooth gel consistency.

  6. Store: Pour into a clean glass jar and keep in the refrigerator.

What Are The Side Effects?

Consult your doctor before you order sea moss, particularly if you suffer from low blood pressure or are taking any medication (especially sympathomimetic and anticoagulants), as sea moss can inhibit the efficacy of medication and may increase certain side effects.

Do not consume sea moss if you suffer (or have suffered) from stomach ulcers. Sea moss can cause bleeding, hypotension, cramps, infections, diarrhea, dizziness, light-headedness and fainting.

Do not consume sea moss if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Sea moss is not recommended for children as it can suppress their immune system.
